our students and hostel
Because there are many good government and private schools in Ladakh, we run our institute as a hostel. We send primary students to government public schools, and we pay the fees to send higher-level students to private schools like SOS Tibetan Children’s Village in Choglamsar and Siddhartha Higher Secondary School in Stok. After school, hired teachers help students complete their homework, while the monks teach them Tibetan language, meditation, and so on.
We give the students room, board, tuition fees, book and clothing allowances, and access to medical care. The youth hostel and cultural center’s comprehensive facilities provide the children with the resources they need to attend area schools. Our project was endorsed by the Office of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in September 2008, and His Holiness inaugurated the campus in 2016.

We have been enrolling children since 2010, and they have achieved much academic success. We provide a free K-10 education, food, and shelter, along with our promise to pay for their higher education. In 2023, 80 children were registered in our program; 50, including young monks, were living at the institute, and 30 were pursuing higher education in Ladakh and other regions of India. The majority of our students come from the local Ladakhi community, and two came from Nepal (their parents were laborers who died while working in local villages).
The children mainly come from the following backgrounds:
- Orphans
- Children of single parents
- Children from poor families with many children
- Children of parents who have little to no income
- Small monks in training
In 2023, our 30 graduates were studying for a variety of careers: one wants to become an engineer; two, amchis (Tibetan medicine doctors); one, a shastri (bachelor’s degree in Sanskrit); one an acharya (master’s in Sanskrit); and one a psychologist. We provide the funds for them to continue their studies. In addition, several are soldiers in the Indian army.
